From Pursuit to Passion to Profession...
I live in Derbyshire on the edge of the Peak District with my wife Francine and grown-up daughter Claire. The other daughter - Helena -is working in London? I would like to thank Francine for buying me my first camera. It was a Kodak Instamatic, but then she was on a student grant.
When I left college for a career on BBC Local Radio, photography became a keen pursuit, swiftly turning to a passion as I poured through photo mags and books, fired by the images of photographers like Charlie Waite, Franco Fontana, Ernst Haas and Michael Busselle as well as lecturers and photographers from my own club Derby City Photographic.
Eventually the passion evolved into a profession. After leaving Radio Derby in 2000 to pursue a freelance career involving broadcasting, film and theatre criticism and feature writing, photography eventually became another profession, mainly because of the digital revolution.
In the summer of 2002, the Well Hung Gallery (yes, really) in my home town Belper kindly exhibited some of my pictorial photo art. I sold 12 pictures in 12 weeks. My images seemed to have appeal. It was the catalyst for launching a website selling photo art to the home, hotel and workplace.
Now I’ve expanded my portfolio to cover a wider spectrum of photography. Photo Art images are now being sold in two restaurants –Angelo's in Milford and the Elaichi in Belper.
I've also branched out into weddings, portraits, portfolios, and commercial and events photography and I've been building up a stock of photos for an image library, particularly of Derbyshire through my involvement as writer/photographer with Derbyshire Life & Countryside.
I have also produced images for calendars, postcards, greeting cards, tourist and travel brochures, and theatre posters, as well as portfolios for artists and musicians. Just look around the site and you’ll see plenty of examples.
Want to know even more about me? My lectures From Pursuit to Passion to Profession and its sequel Professionally Speaking are available to photographic clubs and societies in the North and Midlands. This is what some photo clubs had to say after one of my shows:
"I was at your talk last night and it absolutely blew me away. Your photography is just amazing and so inspirational. You have a fantastic talent for seeing a picture".
"Thanks so much for giving us such an amazing presentation! The members really enjoyed both your photography and your commentary, and it certainly gave us a good deal to think about. One or two of our members have been doing weddings, theatre photography and the like, but watching you chart your progress from novice club photographer to professional was most instructive! I have been asked to book you again".
